Tray Menu Sign

Have you started spring cleaning yet?
Recently as I was doing some spring cleaning,
I dusted this large tray turned Menu sign
and thought I would share it with you once again
and how I painted it with the word Menu.

Found at a local antique market,
I loved the large size to fill in space above my kitchen cabinets.

This tray measure about 20" round.
I gave it a coat of glass and tile medium which I have shared here many times.
Metal primer can also be used
but I was out it so the glass and tile works just as well.
This step gives the surface some tooth for the paint to adhere.
After applying the medium
it's best to let cure 24 hours before
painting.
The Glass and Tile medium is by Folk Art
along with the black paint that I used for the design.
After the background is painted with chalk paint in a light ivory,
I made a copy of the menu graphic
 from
 The Graphics Fairy
and traced it on the surface
using graphite paper.
and a stylus~
Next I
painted the design by hand.
Sometimes I love to do this over the easier versions of transferring.
It gives a hand painted look and is really a lot of fun and relaxing
a bit like adult coloring.
If you remember the graphic above, it had the shading lines included.
At this point,
I could have painted those lines too, but I floated the shading instead.
This is a term and technique used to bring a shadow to the design.
Next, the edge needed a little something too.
So I hand painted black and white checks all around and added light sienna shading.
You know how I love checks~~

Here is the tray now on the top of the cabinets with a black and white rooster.

Thanks to The Graphics Fairy
for always sharing the best designs to create with.

Have you painted anything lately??

I'm on to redesigning some bedroom pieces from the 1940's.
More about that soon.

Have a great day
and
 Happy Creating!

Hi Celeste! Oh, you're something else. This tray looks marvelous. I've never used any of these paints before but when I can I'd love to try! I love the graphic and you painted it just beautifully and of course it looks stunning with your Rooster!

What a beautiful transformation. I really love the checked border. Do you paint all those little squares by hand? Such a pretty redo. I can't wait to see what you do with the deco furniture, Celeste.

Celeste,
It's a total WOW. I really think it looks incredible, I love it. Everyday I am still cleaning up the fine dust drifting upstairs from the basement renovation. Honestly Celeste it's been driving me crazy and I am crazy for keeping up with dusting and cleaning daily. Until the dust is no more this is my reality. Your menu platter looks impressive up on top of your cabinet. I can see you with a smaller blackboard on the counter top and you writing that day's menu. Have a creative week my friend.
xoxo,
Vera

No, Celeste, I haven`t painted much lately, a dew doll faces, :-) and I don`t know if I would ever be as brave, as to try the same you are doing here, and of which I have seen many other wonderful examples from your hands !!
The try looks now elegant, and wonderful.

What a beautiful redo -- from blah to wow! You make it sound so easy, but I know there's a lot of talent there! I'm looking forward to the 40s makeovers.
It is a long time until spring here, but I am sorting and organizing and dusting, too. Whenever that mood strikes, I try to take advantage of it!!
Have a great week Celeste. Blessings, Deborah

What a fun project, Celestina! I love the vintage graphic, what a great idea to use the graphite paper. I've never tried that before, my hand painting isn't nearly as neat as yours:) The checks are so perfect, your tray fits right in perfectly with your decor!

I love it! Of course, the black & white checks put it over the top! :) You have such a vision and talent for creating something unique.

I'm trying to do some spring cleaning, however, there's so much construction near by and the wind continues to blow sand & dust constantly. I kinda feel like I'm back in Amarillo! :)

My neighbor downstairs goes to his deer lease pretty often. He gave me some antlers which I sprayed gold. Painted a back board for them, it didn't stay on the wall and my antlers broke. Perhaps I should just cook, bake & clean! LOL

You are such a talented artist and have such an eye for decorating. You turned an old platter into a beautiful piece of art! Not only do you have such a creative imagination but you also are very knowledgable as to what type of paint to use on different surfaces. Anyone can paint but you really have to know what you're using to make a piece endure over time and years of use. Just lovely! Thanks for sharing!
