Creating a Fresh Magnolia Wreath

Living in Texas
we enjoy gorgeous Southern Magnolia trees
and right now they are blooming beautifully.

This gorgeous Southern Magnolia stands in our front yard and is nearly 40 feet tall.

I love to decorate with the trimmings
and here is an example for creating a
Magnolia Wreath using fresh leaves.

****

To begin, I take a trimming of branches from the tree,
then I lay out all the gatherings
by sizes for easy reach.

I use a simple green Styrofoam round  wreath
from the Dollar Store.
This one is about 14" round.

Next, I begin to cut the leaves and stems
and hot glue them on the wreath.

Going in one direction, I hot glue the leaves
to the top, front of the wreath
and all around the sides and inside area.

Moving the leaves up and down for interest and a natural flow.

Once completely covered, it looks something like this.
The bottom leaves are placed in a cluster of three,
where I plan to place a simple silk ribbon.
You can design your wreath with or without that area.

This is the backside.
No need to glue leaves to the back.
Just place enough around so you do not see the Styrofoam wreath.
The hot glue works great with
these strong thick leaves.

Once complete and the ribbon in place,
I hang it over a picture in our family/library room
using an over the door hanging hook.

You can also add a string of jute or wire wrapped around the ring
before adding the leaves, creating a hook of sorts if you want to
display and hang from a nail.

The fresh wreath will last a couple weeks.
As it dries the color will fade and sometime
I brush on an acrylic paint in dark green to brighten.
It looks pretty dried too but will become brittle,
so care in handling has to be used when moving etc.

************

So there you have it.
Designing a fresh magnolia wreath.
Easy, fun and free
 using hot glue,ribbon and
a Styrofoam  wreath from the Dollar store!

Thanks so much for the tutorial and inspiration. I don't have a magnolia, but lots of my NE Texas neighbors do so I'll be "helping" them trim their trees!

Oh Celeste, I saw this on my reader and instantly clicked over. I've been wanting to make one of these forever. We don't see too many magnolias in So Florida. It's beautiful, my friend.

I love your wreath. I have a big Magnolia tree in the parkway, in fact it is the biggest one on our street. I love it and it reminds me of Virginia.

Thanks so much for the directions on how to make this lovely wreath.

Have a great week.

Very pretty! To buy magnolia leaves here is so expensive. Even the faux leaves are expensive. I love the look though. I never knew it was so easy to make!

That is beautiful and since you have trimmings you might as well use them, and for only a dollar you can't beat that, neat idea to put it over the frame. How wonderful to have such a large tree in your own yard!

Thank you Celestina, it looks so lovely, and in fact I do have a bush in my garden with leaves looking a bit like these- also fat and shiny, as it was here when we came, I don`t know exactly what it is, but not magnolia, I`m sure - I will have to create a wreath , like yours :-) , so thank you for the tutorial, dear. xoxo

What a great way to take the beauty of that gorgeous tree inside where you can enjoy it! I love the easy way of making the wreath that you shared. I am wondering if I can do it with pine branches? No magnolias up here! Oh how I would LOVE to have one though! The smell of the blossoms is so amazing. Our lilacs are getting ready to bloom here, and I am excited about that. Thank you for this source of inspiration tonight, hugs to you!

Oh, I remember this magnolia wreath, Celestina. I really liked it. And it looks so easy to make. The magnolia flower has such a lovely scent, and the leaves are a sturdy green. That's clever to paint the leaves when they start to wither and fade. I'm enjoying some of your old posts, and so glad you decided to stay in blog land with us. : )

I agree that one of the many of blessings Southern Living are our Magnolia Trees. Your wreath turned out so lovely and what a fabulous thought on painting the leaves to extend the life of the wreath as it begins to fade. Lovely my dear!
